Hackers Begin Transferring Stolen $182 Million from Poloniex to Tornado Cash
The individual responsible for looting the cryptocurrency exchange Poloniex has initiated the transfer of Ethereum (ETH) to the mixing service Tornado Cash, as reported by the digital asset de-anonymizing platform Arkham. According to Arkham, the hacker moved a total of 1126.1 ETH, valued at over $3.4 million, through a series of 20 transactions on Monday and Tuesday. This marks the hacker’s first foray into the controversial Ethereum-based crypto mixer, which assists users in concealing their digital assets.
In early November, the hacker targeted Poloniex, making off with $56 million worth of ETH, $48 million worth of Tron (TRX), $18 million worth of Bitcoin (BTC), and smaller amounts of other cryptocurrencies. Despite Poloniex offering a 5% white hat bounty, which went unclaimed, the hacker still retains $181.47 million worth of crypto in their main address, according to Arkham.
Justin Sun, the founder of Tron, has experienced a series of attacks on his affiliated projects in recent months. In September, hackers exploited the Sun-associated exchange giant HTX, resulting in the theft of approximately 4,999 Ethereum worth $7.9 million, according to blockchain security firm PeckShield. Subsequently, in November, hackers targeted both HTX and Heco Bridge, another Sun-affiliated project used for transferring funds between Ethereum and the energy-saving blockchain Heco Chain, resulting in a combined loss of $100 million, according to cybersecurity firm Cyvers.
In January, HTX fell victim to yet another attack when it was hit by a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, resulting in a brief outage. A DDoS attack occurs when malicious actors overwhelm a website with excessive traffic to disrupt its infrastructure.
