Dutch Court Sentences Tornado Cash Developer, Alexey Pertsev, to Five Years and Four Months Imprisonment

Alexey Pertsev, the developer behind Tornado Cash, has been sentenced to 64 months in jail for laundering billions of dollars, according to a recent press release from the Oost-Brabant district court in the Netherlands.

The court handed down the sentence on Tuesday, citing Pertsev’s involvement in creating the Ethereum-based coin mixing system that allows users to conceal their digital assets. In its statement, the court highlighted that Tornado Cash does not impose any barriers for individuals with criminal assets looking to launder money, which led to Pertsev being found guilty of the money laundering charges.

Furthermore, the court ruled that the defendant would not have his seized Porsche and cryptocurrency, valued at around 1.9 million euros, returned to him.

Pertsev was arrested in the Netherlands in August 2022 on money laundering allegations after the US Treasury Department prohibited American citizens from using Tornado Cash due to national security risks. The agency revealed that the North Korean group Lazarus, allegedly responsible for the Axie Infinity bridge attack worth over $600 million, used Tornado Cash to conceal their illegal gains.

Roman Storm and Roman Semenov, who were also involved in developing the crypto mixer, are facing accusations of money laundering and sanctions violations in the US. Storm is currently out on bail awaiting trial, while Semenov has not yet been apprehended.
