Billionaire Leon Cooperman Warns of Impending Financial Crisis as US National Debt Skyrockets by $273,859,000,000 in Two Months

The United States government’s financial situation is rapidly deteriorating, as it accumulated over a quarter of a trillion dollars in debt within just two months. Recent data from the Treasury Department’s Debt to the Penny system reveals that the national debt of the country increased from $34.297 trillion on February 21st to $34.571 trillion on April 24th. This represents a staggering increase of $273.859 billion in a span of approximately 60 days.

This alarming level of debt is occurring at a time when billionaire investor Leon Cooperman is issuing warnings about an imminent financial crisis. Cooperman believes that the country missed an opportunity to achieve financial sustainability when it disregarded the recommendations outlined in the Simpson-Bowles report, which was released in December 2010 during the Obama administration. The report aimed to prevent a potential financial disaster by reducing government spending and increasing revenue in order to stabilize and reduce the national debt.

Cooperman expressed his concerns during an interview on CNBC, stating, “The debt situation, you’re right, I’m concerned. We have a system of leadership in this country that has devolved into a crisis. A few months ago on your program, Mitt Romney and Senator Joe Manchin endorsed the Simpson-Bowles report, which was around eight or nine years ago. The problem is, we haven’t taken any action based on the report, and the problem has now tripled in size. But the real issue is that we have no idea when the consequences will hit… If some people insist that deficits don’t matter, then perhaps I am being too cautious. However, I firmly believe that deficits do matter, and I think we are heading towards a financial crisis in this country.”

In March, the Congressional Budget Office announced that the federal deficit for the 2023 fiscal year amounted to $1.7 trillion, an increase from $1.4 trillion in 2022.
