JPMorgan Chase experiences data breach impacting personal details of 451,809 customers.

JPMorgan Chase has announced that it has uncovered a data breach that has affected the personal information of approximately 450,000 customers. According to recent filings with the Office of the Maine Attorney General, the banking giant identified a software issue that has been active since August 26th, 2021.

The bug allowed unauthorized individuals to access the retirement plan records of 451,809 customers. These records contain sensitive details such as names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and bank account numbers. JPMorgan has since resolved the issue, which inadvertently granted full access to several “authorized system users” who were employed by JPMorgan customers or their representatives.

Fortunately, JPMorgan has found no evidence to suggest that the compromised personal information has been misused thus far. To further support affected customers, the bank is offering two years of free credit monitoring through Experian.

This incident is not the first time JPMorgan Chase has encountered security breaches. In 2014, the bank experienced one of the largest data breaches in history due to a cyberattack that impacted the accounts of 76 million households and seven million small businesses. The New York Times reported that the bank’s security team had neglected to implement two-factor authentication on one of its network servers, leading to the theft of customers’ email addresses, home addresses, and phone numbers. However, no evidence suggested that account information was compromised in the hack.
