Report: Wells Fargo Gives Customer Counterfeit $100 Bill, Warns of Valueless Withdrawal and Fake Currency
A Wells Fargo patron was left dumbfounded when the banking behemoth handed her counterfeit money during what appeared to be a routine withdrawal, according to reports from the ABC-affiliated news station WAPT. Kam Ridley visited a Wells Fargo branch in Mississippi to withdraw cash and settle her bills. However, when she tried to deposit the money into her other bank, Trustmark, the ATM rejected her $100 bill. Perplexed, Ridley approached a teller inside the bank, who informed her that the money she received from Wells Fargo was clearly fake. In response, Wells Fargo issued a statement highlighting its efforts to combat fraud by scanning paper money. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency acknowledged the incident but suggested that customers who encounter counterfeit money from their banks may struggle to prove what happened. Counterfeit cash incidents have been reported across the US in recent weeks, with individuals attempting to bleach $1 bills and print $100 markings on top. The US Secret Service revealed that it confiscated $21.8 million in counterfeit money last year, resulting in 197 arrests.
