US City Launches Latest Guaranteed Income Experiment: $2,250,000 to Be Distributed Without Restrictions
After years of careful planning, an American city is on the verge of implementing an innovative program that focuses on supporting families. According to the local news outlet the Daily Bulletin, Pomona, California’s Flourishing Families initiative is set to launch in a few months, aiming to provide financial assistance to young parents who are facing economic hardships.
Initially proposed in 2021, this 18-month, $2.25 million project is specifically targeting parents between the ages of 18 and 25 with children under the age of five. The program will select a total of 600 families, with 350 assigned to the control group and the remaining 250 designated to the test group.
Families in the test group will receive a monthly stipend of $500 for the duration of a year and a half. On the other hand, those in the control group will also receive stipends but will be required to complete certain tasks aimed at enhancing their overall well-being.
To ensure the program’s effectiveness is properly evaluated, the organization has teamed up with UCLA to process data and conduct analysis. Participants will be interviewed after twelve months into the program and once more after its completion.
Pomona Mayor Tim Sandoval emphasizes the importance of investing in children, stating, “The most valuable investment we can make in our communities is in our children. When we invest in our children, we will have better outcomes.”
The funding for this program comes from the $4.5 million coronavirus aid granted to the city in 2021. Individuals interested in participating will have to wait until May when the program launches its marketing and outreach efforts for enrollment. The distribution of funds is expected to begin in July of this year.
