Coin Center, a crypto advocacy group, intends to submit an amicus brief in support of the co-founders of Samourai Wallet.

The nonprofit organization Coin Center is currently considering the possibility of filing an amicus brief in support of the co-founders of Samourai Wallet, a crypto mixer. Recently, Keonne Rodriguez and William Lonergan Hill were arrested for allegedly running an unlicensed money-transmitting business that conducted over $2 billion in illegal transactions. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Justice claims that Samourai Wallet laundered more than $100 million in criminal proceeds. Jerry Brito, the executive director of Coin Center, believes that the charges in the indictment are questionable. When asked if Coin Center plans to file an amicus brief in support of the mixer, Brito stated that they are considering it and mentioned that they previously filed in the Tornado Cash indictment and may do so again in this case. An amicus brief is a legal document filed by a non-involved party in a case, aiming to provide additional information or arguments to assist the court in making its decision. Tornado Cash, an Ethereum-based coin mixing system, was sanctioned by the U.S. in 2022 for national security reasons. One of its founders, Roman Storm, was arrested last year on charges of laundering $1 billion in criminal proceeds, including funds for the sanctioned North Korean cybercriminal outfit, the Lazarus Group.
