Data Hackers Claim to Have Breached Federal Reserve Allegedly Exposing 33 Terabytes of Data

A notorious Russian hacker group has announced that it has successfully hacked into the U.S. Federal Reserve. Security experts have stated that the ransomware group LockBit claims to have obtained 33 terabytes of sensitive banking information belonging to Americans.

The group has stated that it is holding the data hostage and is demanding a payment from the Federal Reserve in order to keep the information confidential. They have given a deadline of 48 hours for the Fed to hire a new negotiator and dismiss their current representative, whom they have insulted as “a clinical idiot” for valuing the bank secrecy of Americans at only $50,000.

The Federal Reserve has not yet responded to the claims and has not confirmed whether their systems have been compromised. Security experts have stated that they are skeptical of LockBit’s claims and will only believe them if the group provides proof of the hack online.

LockBit has a history of carrying out disruptive cyberattacks on banks, governments, and organizations, and the U.S. Department of State has recently offered a reward of up to $15 million for information leading to the arrest of anyone involved in LockBit’s operations. The Department of State has stated that LockBit has carried out over 2,000 attacks since January 2020, causing significant disruptions and resulting in over $144 million in ransom payments.
