Leaked: Names and Social Security Numbers of 1,883 Pension Plan Members by s Wealth Management Division
Bank of America’s wealth management division, Merrill, has reported an accidental data leak involving the personal information of 1,883 pension plan members. The incident occurred when an employee mistakenly sent an email containing the first names, last names, and Social Security numbers of participants in the Walmart 401(k) plan to an unauthorized recipient. Merrill has assured that the incident is isolated and there is no evidence of the exposed data being misused. This comes in the wake of recent data breaches at JPMorgan Chase and Santander, which affected their customers. Santander disclosed that certain information of employees and customers in Chile, Spain, and Uruguay was exposed, while JPMorgan Chase discovered a software bug that allowed unauthorized access to retirement plan records of over 451,000 customers. Both firms have taken steps to rectify the issues and have found no evidence of misuse of the compromised data. Merrill is advising affected customers to monitor their credit reports and account statements for unauthorized transactions and potential identity theft, and is offering a two-year membership to Experian IdentityWorks.
