US House Officials Call on President Biden to Release Binance Employee Detained in Nigeria Report
A plea from US lawmakers is urging the White House to intervene and assist a Binance employee who has been detained in Nigeria since February.
Tigran Gambaryan, the Head of Financial Crime Compliance at Binance, was arrested in Nigeria upon his arrival for meetings with government officials to discuss the exchange’s compliance issues.
In response, the Nigerian government has filed charges against Binance, Gambaryan, and another executive, Nadeem Anjarwalla. They have accused the world’s largest crypto exchange of being responsible for the collapse of the Naira, Nigeria’s local currency.
In a letter directed to US President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Special Presidential Envoy Roger Carstens, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul, Representative Rich McCormick, and fourteen other Republican representatives assert that Gambaryan is being unlawfully detained by a foreign government.
The lawmakers emphasize that the allegations against Gambaryan are unfounded and are being used as a tactic by the Nigerian government to pressure Binance.
They express concern over Gambaryan’s treatment while in detention, highlighting a recent incident where he contracted malaria and was initially denied hospital treatment. It was only after collapsing in court that he was eventually transferred to a private hospital for proper care. However, as of June 4, the prison has not fully complied with the court order to ensure his health and well-being.
The legislators are calling for Gambaryan’s case to be transferred to the Office of the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, which specializes in securing the release of Americans who are wrongfully detained or taken hostage abroad.
They stress the urgency of the situation, stating that Gambaryan’s health and safety are at risk, and immediate action is necessary to prevent any further harm.
