Walrus a Decentralized Storage Protocol Introduces Public Testnet
Mysten Labs, the company behind Web 3.0 infrastructure, announced today that Walrus Protocol, a decentralized storage network, has launched its public testnet following a successful devnet.
Walrus Protocol is designed to store and deliver large data files, such as rich media content, audio files, videos, images, and PDFs, from any source based on Web 2.0 or Web 3.0. These files, known as “blobs,” are stored efficiently and securely by Walrus, which offers resilient, scalable, programmable storage solutions.
The public testnet of Walrus, along with its testnet token, WAL, is supported by Sui as the coordination layer. Sui provides a dedicated management architecture for Walrus, enabling it to store its global state and metadata with quick consensus and composability. It also allows for the integration of storage into smart contracts on Sui.
The testnet launch of Walrus includes various features:
– API endpoints that support the deletion of data.
– A dedicated Walrus explorer, developed by Stakestab Inc, which allows users to search data quickly and comprehensively. Stakestab Inc is the maker of Suiscan and Blockberry API platform.
– A complete tokenomics ecosystem for the Walrus token, WAL, including epoch management, staking, unstaking, rewards, and a WAL token faucet for developers.
– A WAL staking app developed by Mysten Labs.
George Danezis, the chief scientist and co-founder of Mysten Labs, stated, “The launch of Walrus’s testnet is a significant milestone in the journey towards decentralized storage networks. With Akord and Decrypt migrating to Walrus, we will witness how a decentralized storage network can bring various applications to a mass audience.”
In conjunction with the public testnet launch of Walrus, Akord, a secure storage and collaboration platform, has announced its migration from Arweave to Walrus. Akord aims to provide user-friendly, cost-effective, and decentralized storage solutions for digital assets. The migration is scheduled to take place within the next week. Decrypt Media has also announced its plans to integrate with Walrus, making it the first media outlet to commit to storing media articles and video content on the platform.
Walrus utilizes a system that breaks down large data files into smaller fragments called “red stuff” and distributes them across multiple storage nodes. This approach ensures that even if some fragments are lost, the data can still be reconstructed. It eliminates the need for data redundancy and allows the network to grow seamlessly while ensuring fast and reliable access to data. Walrus also introduces advanced storage verification through proofs and attestations, incentivizing nodes to store fragments of each file. This method reduces the cost of proving data storage by assessing the entire storage node instead of individual files.
Mysten Labs initially launched Walrus on Devnet in June 2024. The whitepaper for Walrus was presented by Janet Wu, the head of product and platform at Mysten Labs, at Sui’s Singapore Builder House event in September 2024. The mainnet launch of Walrus is scheduled for 2025.
Mysten Labs is a team of experts in distributed systems, programming languages, and cryptography. The founders of Mysten Labs were senior executives at Meta’s Novi research and lead architects of the Diem blockchain and Move programming language. Their mission is to create foundational infrastructure for Web 3.0.
Walrus is a next-generation decentralized storage network designed for data and rich media content. It leverages innovations in erasure coding to provide exceptional data availability and robustness with minimal replication overhead. Powered by Sui, Walrus can scale to hundreds or thousands of networked decentralized storage nodes without compromising performance.
Akord is a platform built on a digital vault protocol that offers various features such as file management, end-to-end encryption, file sharing, access control, minting, and token gated access. It includes an app, API, SDK, and CLI, with a focus on user and developer experience.
